Coaching, Mentoring & Teaching

CMT….country music television?… No, coaching, mentoring and teaching!

I have unofficially been “CMT”ing over the past ten years, but after repeatedly getting asked, I am ready to officially offer this.

What am I offering? Two things….

Thing 1: A Conversation

Trouble shooting, sounding board and someone simply to bounce ideas off of. The first thing I am offering are single sessions. Over my years in practice, for some reason or another, I have had the opportunity to have conversations with 100’s of practitioners or “fulcrums” in the allied health professions. Inevitably, we end up talking about the usual topics of energy dynamics in clinic, burning out and challenging cases. If you find yourself “in a pickle,” Thing 1 is an 80 minute conversation in person or online.

Thing 2: A Course in Fulcrumming

“Fulcrumming” is the act of supporting another being as they shift during their journey in health and life in general. It is a term I began using several years ago in trying to understand the therapeutic process that takes place between two people. More specifically, the PROPER therapeutic process that doesn’t leave the “fulcrum” or the helper, burnt out…

There are two forms of fulcrumming: "hands off" and "hands on." Both begin largely as an energetic process with certain signs that it is taking place. Depending on how you are operating determines whether you as a fulcrum will feel drained or neutral afterwards. The "hands off" form usually takes place in the form of a conversation, but not always. The “hands on” form of fulcrumming stems from Biodynamic Osteopathic and Cranial-Sacral work.

The first portion of the course is mostly theoretical and can benefit anyone who is in a helping or supporting role. Professionally and non-professionally. Throughout our time, we will discuss different concepts, societal myths and common pitfalls that fulcrums find themselves dealing with. We will also discuss simple and easy to use practices to help identify and avoid these trouble spots. By the end of the course, you will understand how to support yourself and help others in the best way that you can. In other words, to become the best fulcrum you can be….

The remainder of the course is designed to support fulcrums who are operating “hands on.” Therefore, it is aimed at those already in or about to enter the “hands on” professions. This includes (but isn’t limited to) osteopathic practitioners / students, cranial-sacral therapists, massage therapists, physiotherapists, chiropractors, yoga / pilates instructors / therapists, acupuncturists, and energy workers. Some understanding of Osteopathy in the Cranial Field or Cranial-Sacral work will help, but isn’t necessary either.

Rather than learning a bag of techniques, the focus will be on integrating concepts to apply to techniques you already have in your toolbox.

But why no complicated techniques?

Because complicated techniques are not the answer. Buying an expensive brush does not make the artist more skilled. This is a course for the artist. This is a course for the fulcrum.

Where did this come from?

In truth, I was burnt out for the zillionth time and ready to pack it in shortly after finishing Osteopathic school. However, after examining my experience and the experiences of other countless fulcrums, I began noticing certain patterns that either helped or hindered us.

A return to simplicity…

My strength as a “CMT” has always been meeting someone wherever they are, offering a different lens to look through and tailor making concepts to work specifically for them. There are usually "hidden" foundational patterns that are guiding how you are operating as a helper. Once we discover these, then you can go about shifting them and how you are operating. It’s my belief that you already have the information and “brushes” that you need and I can help you organize them with no shortage of quirky metaphors along the way.

Who does this approach help?

Firstly, fulcrumming is meant to help the fulcrum live and work in a more balanced and sustainable manner. Secondly, this helps everyone that the fulcrum is supporting and helping along the way.

Fulcrumming as a “hand on” modality is a simple, gentle, and effective approach to working with the person in a holistic sense. Rather than addressing one system at a time, fulcrumming is a multi system approach to help the body reach a state better state of organization, auto-regulation and homeostasis. Although fulcrumming is beneficial for singular complaints, it is also highly effective with complex, multi system complaints that other approaches have been unable to help.
